Along with the pandemic, we got introduced to a new skin concern known as 'maskne'. Maskne is a term used to describe acne that forms in areas that are covered by your face mask after having worn it for a very long time. It needs to be noted that maskne isn't just about acne; it manifests in the forms of itchiness, bumps and swelling too. Face masks trap the breath under the area that could activate the skin's natural oil production and clog the pores, which lead to acne and other issues like blackheads or inflammation. Since we are going to be wearing face masks for a good amount of time, it's best that we also learn how to tackle, prevent and subsequently treat maskne.
How To Prevent Maskne And Other Skin Problems
1. Cleanse Your Face
Regularly cleanse and moisturise your skin, at least twice a day. Use a gentle deep pore cleanser that will keep your pores clean and tight to avoid breakouts. Use a cleanser that has retinoids or salicylic acid. Make sure that your skin does not have any residue of dirt or makeup before you start your day or go to sleep.
Moisturisers help maintain your skin by locking the moisture in and act as a shield from external stressors. If you have oily skin, then opt for a gel moisturiser. Those with normal to combination skin can use a lightweight moisturiser, while those with dry skin may use a cream-based moisturiser. However, regardless of your skin type make sure that the moisturiser is non-comedogenic.
3. Exfoliate Often
The prevalence of dead skin cells is one of the leading causes of breakouts. Long term mask-wearing can cause dead skin cells to pile up. Use a gentle scrub or a chemical exfoliator made of alpha-hydroxy acids (like lactic and citric acid) or beta-hydroxy acids (like salicylic acid and hydroxyl) to keep dead cells at a bay. One needs to be careful about not overdoing exfoliation as it can cause irritation and end up enlarging the pores.
4. Use Hydrating Sheet Masks
If your face feels dehydrated, you can address this by hydrating masks that are rich in hyaluronic acid. Once a week, use a sheet mask that brightens your skin instantly and has a hydrating effect on it. Put it in the refrigerator for a refreshing cooling effect.
5. Wash Your Mask Often
You should regularly wash your masks after every use. Follow this by air drying your mask and you are good to go. You can even try masks made out of natural fabrics that can quickly wick moisture and are breathable.
