The most common skin complaint in monsoon is, you guessed it, oily skin. Humidity leads to stickiness over the face, body and even the scalp. However, a large but barely recognised problem that also exists is that of skin dryness during the season. Dry patches and flaking also occurs in monsoon so to shed light on it, we spoke to Dr. Batul Patel, Dermatologist and Medical Director at The Bombay Skin Clinic for her expert advice.
Understanding The Reasons
There are numerous reasons why dryness occurs specifically in the monsoon season. "As many face oiliness, they tend to use more salicylic-based face washes, toners and scrubs to de-grease their skin. While this temporarily removes oil, the oil gland produces more oil to compensate. This leads to a cycle between oily and dry which changes the PH level of the skin drastically between acidic and alkaline." says Dr. Batul.
She continues, "A very hot shower followed by drying or scrubbing the skin too aggressively can also add to dryness." When one isn't sure about their skin type and uses the wrong products which are not suitable, this can unknowingly make skin dry as well. What often goes unnoticed is the fact that one's skincare routine needs to change with the location and season as well. "Products that work in one season and location may not necessarily work in another just as well," adds Dr. Batul.
Driving Away Dryness
The reasons are many but thankfully, it can be fixed. "A skin specialist can educate you on the best skincare routine and recommend the right products, rather than self-prescribing. Use a gentle face wash rather than an overly drying one. To remove makeup, micellar water is a good idea," advises Dr. Batul and continues, "Post a shower, dab yourself dry only and follow it with two layers of moisturiser. Also opt for lukewarm water while bathing."
