Dig a little on Instagram and you're sure to come across a few posts on gummy vitamin supplements that many gorgeous influencers claim are the secret behind their luscious tresses and smooth skin. Which begs the question - do supplements really work? And if so, how do we get on that train, stat? To answer these questions, we got India's premier aromatherapist and founder of Aroma Magic, Dr. Blossom Kochhar to tell us what we need to know.
Are supplements really important, even with a healthy diet? Dr. Blossom Kochhar says yes. "Previously, our food used to be freshly grown and naturally produced, which gave us all the nourishment we needed. That isn't the case anymore which makes supplements an important part of a modern lifestyle," says Dr. Kochhar.
While gaining vitamins and minerals through the food we eat is ideal, that isn't always possible with the food choices we make. Also, it may take far too many servings to produce the tiny required dosage of those nutrients from it.
That's why supplements make a good addition to one's diet. "For the body to get nutrients through food, it first needs to be consumed and digested, which is a long process. Supplements have the upper hand here because they are direct sources of nutrients which eliminates this process. Due to this, they are absorbed quicker in the body and show their effects on the hair and skin much faster as well," says Dr. Kochhar.
With the variety of supplements available, choosing the right ones can seem confusing but here's what Dr. Kochhar says, "Supplements like vitamin C, biotin, omega-3, calcium and B-complex are the key ones along with a balanced diet."
So before you can pop in at the chemist for beautiful hair and skin from within, here's the most important part about supplements. "Always consult a physician before you take any supplements, even more so if you're on antibiotics and allopathic medicine. Also, make sure to take a break from supplements every once in a while so that your body doesn't get immunized to them," advises Dr. Kochhar.
