The 2024 Paris Olympics has everyone glued to their screens and cheering for their favorite athletes. The mixed doubles badminton competition on August 2 between China's Huang Ya Qiong-Zheng Siwei and Korea's Seo Seung Jae-Chae Yoo Jung was particularly special. The event was filled with both triumph and romance. Huang Ya Qiong not only won the gold medal with Zheng Siwei but also accepted a proposal from her teammate and men's doubles player Liu Yuchen. To propose to his lady love, Liu Yuchen took the traditional route by getting down on one knee. The romantic moment took place after the medal ceremony.
In an interview with Olympics.com, Huang Ya Qiong expressed her joy about both winning the trophy and getting engaged. She said, “I cannot describe the feeling I have because I am happy, happy, happy. Getting the gold medal is recognition of our journey. I was surprised by the engagement ring. I've been focusing on training to become an Olympic champion. I never expected it. I haven't thought about how we will celebrate.” According to the report, the gold medallist broke into happy tears after she said “yes” to Liu Yuchen.
Huang Ya Qiong had no clue that Liu had planned this elaborate and grand gesture of love. It was nevertheless, a pleasant surprise for her. “For me, the proposal is very surprising because I have been preparing for the game. Today I am an Olympic champion and I got proposed (to), so that's something I didn't expect,” she said as quoted by AP.
