Let's be blunt - handbags aren't cheap. Especially real leather handbags. And if you're buying designer... well, we don't need to remind you of the money you spent on that baby. But if you want to get your worth out of that bag, there are a few extra measures you'll have to take. Here's how to keep your leather bag looking new:
1. Proper storage
I know when you get home after a long day, you couldn't be bothered about anything. You might even want to throw your bag in one corner, followed by your clothes on top of it. But don't. Not if you want your bag to maintain its beauty and shape. The best practice is to actually not even use the same bag two days in a row. So empty it out, put it back neatly in a storage bag (preferably the one it came in) and let it rest. If it's a structured bag, you might even want to put some stuffing in it, so that the shape is maintained. Sounds extreme? We can assure you it's the only way you'll be able to turn your bags into family heirlooms.
2. Regular cleaning
It's the worst job and might sound unnecessary but it's not. Your bag ends up collecting a lot of lint and dirt during the day. You must empty it and then turn it upside down (and inside out, if the style allows) to get rid of it. I find lint rollers to be quite useful as well - for the stubborn bits. Just roll it around on the inside of your bag to make it as clean as possible without dry cleaning.
3. Extra protection
The weather can be harsh - not just on your hair and skin but also on your handbags. Leather isn't waterproof and you should avoid carrying your leather bag out into the rain. But if that's not an option, you can use a leather protectant spray on it. It'll make it more durable and somewhat waterproof. Another option you have is to use beeswax. It could possibly have an effect on the shade of the leather but it will definitely protect it against the rain.
4. A good oiling
Leather can dry out over time, just like your skin. So you need a process that gives it back some of its moisture so it doesn't start flaking. That's where leather conditioning comes in. You get a variety of products in the market that are good for your leather bags. Opt for one that doesn't leave residue and also controls mildew. Just apply it all over, leave for 10-15 minutes and then wipe it clean.
5. Be more careful
Eventually, it does come down to being more conscious of your bag. Don't put it on your shoulder when you have to squeeze into the metro. Don't put it on the floor if you know it's dirty. Yes, it feels very silly to ask for another chair just for your bag and to skip a train because it was too full but these are the tiny things that can cause wear and tear over the years. If you're more careful from the very beginning you can avoid a lot of the damage.
