Barbie promotions have taken July 2023 by storm with the film stars in pastel ensembles and plenty of pink to match the movie's bubblegum palette. Margot Robbie, who was styled by Andrew Mukamal throughout, lent layers to her promotional outfits by paying tribute to Barbie and dressing like the iconic doll through the ages. But it wasn't just Robbie who stood out for her style. Transgender model and American actress Hari Nef attended the European premiere of the movie held in London and took the opportunity to make a fierce statement of femininity on the pink carpet.
Hari donned a creation by Dilara Findikoglu from the designer's collection which debuted at London Fashion Week in February 2023. She was seen in the black bodycon dress which featured padded cap sleeves, a high neckline and slit along the back until its length at the ankle. The dress was studded with silver butter knives of various sizes, some of which were artistically bent to shape the contours of the body along the chest and waist. It was worn with transparent slingback heels which didn't take away from her ensemble whatsoever. Nef's red hair was styled in a bob and paired with silver and black winged eyeliner with a muted lip.
The dress in question has been dubbed the "knife dress" and went viral when it debuted for obvious reasons. Dilara termed it "Joan's Knives" as it was inspired by Joan Of Arc being put on trial for multiple crimes, including dressing like a man. Through the symbolism of the knives over the ebony palette of the dress, Findikoglu aimed to reclaim the narrative of women's wear that speaks for itself and doesn't take orders from anyone else. The motive of the dress was achieved, in the deadliest fashion possible.
