Florals have been ruling the fashion charts and our hearts for many seasons now. From breezy summer wear to even extravagant bridal trousseau, this is a fashion trend that never fails to impress. In fact, it only gets bigger and better. So, to celebrate surreal and whimsical florals, fashion designer Reynu Tandon is all geared up to unveil her brand new collection Surkh at FDCI India Couture Week 2020 on September 21. With COVID-19 pandemic bringing about various changes in the fashion industry, taking fashion shows digital with fashion films is now what designers have been busy with.

We at NDTV Swirlster caught up with Reynu Tandon to learn about her collection Surkh and also get insights to bridal trends for 2020.

Tell us about Surkh. What can we expect?

Reynu Tandon: "Surkh refers to the colour red in Urdu, and being as passionate as the colour. Nowadays brides are more contemporary in terms of their clothing choices, but bridal lehenga is an exception. I feel every bride has this image of a royal and regal bridal look in their mind. Taking inspiration from that I have created Surkh from the contemporary bride who is still traditional at heart. I went traditional, from the silhouette to embroidery, with the classic bridal colour red as the base. I have also included fuschia."

"Brides include softer colours like silvers and golds in their sangeet or reception, so the wedding has to be a very traditional look. A modern bride is someone who balances contemporary with traditional perfectly for that statement bridal look, and that is what Surkh is all about."

What makes for the perfect lehenga for contemporary brides?

Reynu Tandon: "The choice of colour. What colour she wears and the silhouette she picks are very important. When brides come to me, based on her skin tone, I suggest the colour to pick for their bridal outfit. The surface embellishments are also a key to a stunning outfit. I love the various hand-crafts in India - we have so much to offer like zardozi, gotta patti, marori that can be incorporated in the outfit."

"Moreover, opting for the right embroidery can make a contemporary outfit timeless. But at the end of the day, it all depends on how well the bride connects with her wedding outfit and if she feels comfortable wearing it."

What are the fabrics and crafts you have included in your collection?

Reynu Tandon: "From heavily embellished beiges, fuchsia and baby pinks to fuchsia reds and reds, there will be classic pieces, tone-on-tone lehengas, anarkalis, traditional sarees, shararas and ghararas that will make a statement without stealing the light from the bride. Some of the embellishments used are zardozi, Swarovski, nakshi, zari and gora sequins, and in fabrics we have included georgettes and handwoven chanderi.

"The collection has been divided into four parts which will showcase Baby Pink collection for the day time wedding, Fuchsia collection, Fuchsia Red and the Red collection. For me, this season is all about taking a leap into clashing kaleidoscopes of colour."

What made you pick baby pink as one of your prominent hues in your collection?

Reynu Tandon: "My Baby Pink collection is a collection that draws its inspiration from the contemporary bride, especially for day time weddings. It's for a girl that re-conceives fashion with all that's modern and minimalist but with a traditional twist."

What would you say would be 2020's top bridal trends?

Reynu Tandon: "I would say brides are opting for off-beat looks, especially in their lehenga choices. The current year is seeing a shift in terms of fabrics and silhouettes, and they are very bold yet minimal, effortless and fun. Some of the biggest trends we are seeing this year are jacket-lehengas and experimenting with colours. But for me, my bride is a traditional bride and that's a trend that will stay for every year."

Your thoughts on sustainable fashion?

Reynu Tandon: "Sustainable fashion can be defined taking into account both environmental and socio-economic aspects. In practice, this implies continuous work to improve all stages of the product's life cycle, from design, raw material production, manufacturing, transport, storage, marketing and final sale, to use, reuse, repair, remake and recycling of the product and its components."

Your style tips for the upcoming festive season?

Reynu Tandon: "Never copy a celebrity's latest outfit. One should think how you can dress yourself the best. Simple is the way to go with minimal accessories. Let your inner beauty come out with the simple outfit. Your makeup should complement the outfit along with the shoes."

From florals to bright reds, let your bridal looks we a perfect balance between traditional and contemporary.
