We take great pride when India plays well on the world stage or when we prowess in the field of technology among so many of our other achievements. Divita Rai leads the beauty and fashion spree for India at the Miss Universe beauty pageant held in New Orleans, USA this time around. For the national costume round of the show, all countries bring their best fashion foot forward to impress the panel with their country's offering. We looked everywhere and have yet to find a contestant who can top India's official entry. One would assume a lehenga or saree was in the works and while part of it is true, you weren't prepared for what was to come next. In a custom-made lehenga by designer Abhishek Sharma, Divita glistened like molten gold. Inspired by the ethereal portrayal of India as the "golden bird" or "sone ki chidiya" owing to the country's rich cultural heritage, she set flight in custom-made golden wings by Reza Shariffi paired with her golden lehenga.
The lehenga is traditional in essence but modern in effect. The golden lehenga is made from a hand-woven tissue fabric from the Chandheri district located in Madhya Pradesh but is designed to depict the image of a modern India. India's diverse culture is a celebration running through the country's length and breadth which is seen in the embellished blouse and waistband of the lehenga that lends a festive touch to the outfit.
Up close and you can't ignore the intricate details of the jewellery designed specially by Kavya Potluri for the pageant. Right from the head and hair jewellery to the hand harness, God is indeed in the details of Divita Rai's costume.
Here's wishing all the very best to Divita Rai on her quest to bring the glorious Miss Universe crown back home.Comments
