With Instagram, Pinterest and more fashion blogs than we can possibly keep a track off, we're spoilt for choice when it comes to fashion advice. One might tell you the fashion rules and another might tell you to break them. We won't pretend to be the ultimate authority on fashion - we'll leave that to the experts. But we would like to share with you what we've learnt from the ultimate fashion icons from the 20s to today. Here you go:
1. You can have it all
The 20s - Greta Garbo
For movies, she wore extravagant gowns; for public appearances she preferred tailored shirts, silk ties and trousers. In her personal life, Oxford shoes were her go to. You don't have to belong to one style - you can feel bohemian today and androgynous tomorrow. Don't worry yourself if it confuses people, maybe it's not for them. If Greta Garbo could do it in the 20s, you can do it today.
2. Embrace velvet
The 30s - Vivian Leigh
No one can deny that Scarlett O'Hara knew her fashion. And if we were to take lessons from her, it would be to embrace velvet fabric. Whether it's casual wear or Indian wear, there is no other fabric that will feel more luxurious and look richer. The fabric has its own aura and leaves you with little else to do when you want to make a fabulous impression.
3. Don't conform to anyone else's idea of beauty
The 40s - Ingrid Bergman
When a woman stuns you with her grace, even in black and white, you know she's someone you can take inspiration from. The most memorable look of Ingrid Bergman, something that defined 40s fashion, was from Casablanca - chic midi skirt suits, wide brimmed hats and a trench coat. She never bought into Hollywood's idea of beauty and neither should you. Ignore the magazine covers are be your own stylist. Always.
4. Never underestimate the power of a little black dress
The 50s - Audrey Hepburn
It's only ordinary in theory. An LBD is a must for every woman's closet. Audrey Hepburn is the one who has taught us that no matter what happens, a black dress won't ever go out of style and will make you feel under or over-dressed. Buy one now and it'll be your best friend for life.
5. Wear pearls
The 60s - Jackie Kennedy
Whether you're wearing jeans and a tee or a ball gown - a string or pearls will always make you look more elegant. When you're not following the current trends, fall back on Jackie's favourite accessory - a simple pearl necklace. You'll look like a million bucks no matter what you wear with it.
6. Go with the flare
The 70s - Farrah Fawcett
Flared jeans were not in fashion for barely a couple of years before they made a comeback. Farrah Fawcett's style remains so true, even today. So don't throw away your bell-bottoms just yet - or ever actually. They'll look stylish on you despite the decade you're in.
7. Don't stop experimenting with fashion
The 80s - Madonna
From capes and corsets to tutus and tiaras - Madonna has done it all. And she always looks fabulous. The lesson to take here is that no matter what age or size you are, don't let others define what your style should be. Have fun with fashion, try new things and do them with confidence. It'll never fail you.
8. A pair of shoes can make or break your outfit
The 90s - Sarah Jessica Parker
We tend to think of the shoes we'll wear right in the end, once we're already wearing the rest of the outfit. SJP, or Carrie Bradshaw actually, taught us that sometimes you need to find the perfect shoes first and then decide your outfit around it. And don't let anyone tell you that you're 'wasting' money on shoes either. They don't know any better.
9. A slip dresses with spaghetti straps will always be a stunner
The 00s - Kate Moss
It's simple, it's chic and no matter what they say about statement sleeves, a slip dress will never go out of style. Wear it by itself on a summer day and with a faux fur jacket on a winter night, there are more ways to style that dress than you can count. Just look at Kate Moss when you need some inspiration.
10. Monotone is always classy
The 10s - Blake Lively
The Gossip Girl star has made us envious of her wardrobe on-screen and off it. But the one thing she repeatedly goes back to is wearing monotone outfits. Even with difficult colours like yellow. So in Blake fashion, go big or go home when it comes to monotone. Head to toe in one colour makes you really look like you mean business when it comes to style.
