We are always on the lookout for the latest, cool, statement-making trends in fashion, But one look at a chance sighting of what is called 'Kinetic Couture' at Jean Paul Gaultier Autumn/Winter Haute Couture Show 2023 and you will know that we were not ready. The printed blue midi dress had a moving bodice with ruffled detailing leaving the spectators in total awe of the look. The 'moving dress' made more than a few fans on the internet too and with its mind-boggling live motion features, we're sure that you're not surprised. As the internet is prone to do, especially for head-scratching videos like these, it offered up more than a few responses. One user commented "It's kinda creepy, I love the colors" another focused on the positive "I love the art of it all' while another shed light on an interesting dilemma, tinged with a sense of humour, " "I'd be the one forgetting my dress moves and getting freaked out every once in a while" and still another did not hold back "Shocked no one in the comments is talking about Midsommar."
It is not the very first time we have seen a 'moving dress' though. Earlier this year we saw a designer who went big on TikTok for marrying engineering with textiles, to make high-tech dresses. Last year there was 28-year-old Cameron Hughes, a New York-based designer who specializes in high-tech dresses that move with you and also on their own. According to Vogue, he made them as a hobby before the pandemic but started to gain followers when he began to post his creations on TikTok in 2020. He uses engineering skills along with creativity to make these high-tech pieces. The purple strapless dress with layered ruffles can mechanically lift the ruffles on its own while looking stunning at the same time. Users were quick to appreciate the dress, with comments like "Your like the real-life version of the Hunger Games fashion designer, pretty sick" and "You can't say anything other than genius !!!!!"
Here's another crowd-pleaser from Cameron which had a steady black bodice and rolled-up flared patterns on the multi-coloured rotating skirt.
Digging deeper into fashion history, we go back a few years to designer Iris van Herpen who collaborated with an American sculptor Anthony Howe, for his large-scale kinetic works in his 2019 collection named Hypnosis. This collection was inspired by motion and kinetic energy. While it didn't have the same motion capability, its nuanced aesthetic and metaphorical leanings made up in art what it lacked in technical prowess.
Who wouldn't love more of such mindblowing dresses being made?
