Weekend is here! If you are in Chennai and are looking for interesting getaways for a memorable weekend, you will be happy to know that there are many options to choose from. Tamil Nadu is not just known for its spectacular temples but also for its beaches, historic towns, hill stations, wildlife destinations and secluded getaways. So there's something for every kind of traveller, besides the popular tourist spots like Mahabalipuram and Puducherry. Excited much? Well, you should be because you absolutely deserve a break.
If you still haven't been able to zero down on a place for your weekend break, we list down three amazing options:
1. Thanjavur
Thanjavur, which was formerly known as Tanjore, is a temple city in Tamil Nadu. It is probably the best place to get a glimpse of the rich culture of the Chola Dynasty as well as the Marathas. Must visits include the Royal Place (which also houses Saraswati Mahal Library Museum and the Art Gallery) and Brihadishwara Temple. While you go about exploring, don't forget to try the local food and pick up Tanjore dolls and traditional paintings for keepsake.

2. Tharangambadi
If you consider yourself to be a beach lover, then Tharangambadi or Tranquebar should be on your list. Located further south from Puducherry, Tharangambadi too has evident Dutch influences with its Portuguese-style buildings and creole cuisine. It's not as crowded as Puducherry and probably that's why it is perfect for those who are looking to spend some quiet time. Besides lazing around in a beach resort, you can explore Fort Dansborg and dine at Bungalow on the Beach Restaurant.

3. Yercaud
For those who want to beat the heat and soak in some green, Yercaud makes for a perfect escape. The quant hill station in Servarayan Hills is also a trekker's paradise with its breathtaking sights. It's surrounded by lakes and waterfalls and driving around the winding roads is always a refreshing change. Check out Kiliyur Falls, Karadiyur View Point, Big Lake and Kottachedu Teak Forest.
