Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is a popular harvest festival predominantly celebrated in the northern Indian state of Punjab. Every year, the festival falls on the 13th or the 14th of April as it marks the beginning of the solar year and also the harvest season. The day has a lot of cultural significance for the Sikh community. The day marks the founding of the Khalsa Panth, a group of devout Sikhs by the 10th Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh, in the year 1969. While paying homage to that significant day, even today the day is celebrated with gusto, cheer and happiness by the Sikhs, who come together to sing kirtans, arrange processions and visit gurudwaras to offer prayers. Though the festival is mainly celebrated by the Sikhs, Hindus and other communities in the country also celebrate the festival. They dress up in their traditional attire, perform traditional dances and sing folk songs as a tribute to the harvest season.
