We spend hours together cleansing, oiling and treating our hair, face, nails and feet in the effort to keep them healthy. But there's one body part we don't pay too much attention to when we really should and that's our vagina. It is responsible for smooth menses, sexual well-being and pregnancy so it's important to give it the care it deserves with expert advice by none other than Dr. Anjila Aneja, Director Obs. & Gynae, Fortis La Femme. So here's what you need to know about keeping your vagina healthy.
1. When wiping, always go from front to back
When wiping your pubic area, make sure you move in the direction of front to back. "This ensures that the area stays dry and moisture is reduced," adds Dr. Anjila. The motion of front to back also prevents the spread of any bacteria in your vaginal area.
2. Always opt for cotton panties
While your lacy hipsters and stringy thongs are fine for special occasions, on a daily basis wear soft, cotton panties which allow your vagina to breathe and stay moisture-free.
3. Don't be unsanitary during your period
Whether you choose tampons, sanitary pads or menstrual cups, hygiene is top priority during your periods. "Make sure you change your sanitary napkin or tampon within 4 - 6 hours. In the case of menstrual cups, as they are reusable, wash thoroughly before reinsertion," advises Dr. Anjila.
4. Say no to washes
While using a vaginal washing product or a douche may be all the rage, it's unnecessary really. Says Dr. Anjila, "products and douches remove the protective layer around the vagina which can allow the formation of bacteria in the area." Furthermore, such washes can also upset the vagina's PH level which isn't ideal for it.
5. Think well before hair removal
"The pubic area is a sensitive one so for hair removal in this area, a trim is all that's needed as more extensive hair removal methods can irritate and causes blisters and bumps in the area," confirms Dr. Anjila.
