What if you could go to sleep every night happy and calm? What if right before you fall asleep you are counting your blessings and thinking about everything good that has happened during the day? Won't that just make you feel like day done well? Well, turns out that is what a gratitude journal is supposed to do for you.
A gratitude journal is a diary that you maintain where you jot down all the good things that happened in your day and things you are thankful for. What that does at the end of the day is bring down your stress levels, bringing over you a sense of calm, and also a sense of good being and confidence. You are reiterating happy thoughts and boosting your self esteem, and we all know we can use all that, right?
In the beginning, maintaining a gratitude journal might feel like a chore but once you see how beneficial it is in fighting negative thoughts, unhappiness, and pessimism, you would want to participate in the activity yourself. Once you get into the flow of the activity, you would want to do this "me-time" thing just as a medicine for your soul.
And as for reasons why you should?
- You will get a new perspective for things. Every night when you sit and contemplate about all that happened, you will look at things that happened in your day in a new way and that will help you in the future.
- You learn more and more about yourself; the more you explore your mind about what you are thankful for, the more you realise what makes you happy in life, thus helping you discover yourself more.
- Most importantly, when you are having a bad day, or a day where you will nothing is right in your life, the journal works like a medicine. You can go back and read everything that you are thankful for in life and that is bound to make you feel better.
- The gratitude journal will help you rediscover simple things in life. The things you are thankful for need not be deep or "meaningful"; they can be something as simple as a movie you watched, a play or a conversation with a friend.
