When we hear about crimes against women, it disturbs us. We discuss it in our living rooms or on social media, but do we really do anything to bring a change? Being born as a girl in this country is still not received with pleasure in a large number of families and such baby girls are mostly just left to their destiny.
Here's a mother, Kavita Baluni, who, at a rather young of 27, decided to adopt a baby girl and that too, one who had Down Syndrome. Fortunately, her husband supported her decision in equal measure. They truly are beacons of change.
"I am asked why I decided to adopt a child with Down Syndrome. My answer to that is, why not?
Adopting a girl child had always been on my mind. I was determined to give a girl a home because of the way our society looks down on and treats women in general. I have never had to worry about what others would think or how they would react to my decision to adopt because my husband supported me wholeheartedly through this. He has been my pillar of strength.
We had not planned on adopting a child with special needs. While in the US, we met a few children with Down Syndrome and read up extensively on the subject. And we asked ourselves, why not?
We came back to India and got ourselves registered under the Central Adoption Resource Authority of India (CARA). There is no waiting time for adopting kids with special needs, so we got to meet the baby almost immediately.
The moment we saw the baby, we knew she was the one for us. She was 15-months-old when we first met her. In 2 visits, all we wanted was to bring her back with us. And she did, within 45 days of us registering with CARA!
We have hit off with her fabulously since Day 1! She's such a happy and loving child that I couldn't have asked for more. She has been through tough times and likes certain things to happen in her own way.
