It was during the bubonic plague that Shakespeare wrote King Lear while the theatres were closed. Isaac Newton created calculus when he was social distancing. So does that mean you will chance upon the world's next greatest discovery while you are confined at home during the Coronavirus quarantine? Not necessarily and you shouldn't be pressured to either.
A glance through social media platforms will give you a glimpse at how the rest of the world is spending their time. Many are busy cooking, baking and experimenting in the kitchen. It's no wonder dalgona coffee and banana bread were trending recently. If not that, they are working out at home, studying a new skill, rediscovering old hobbies or organising their closets. Even celebrities from across the world have taken to strumming guitars, doing dance challenges and spreading positivity.

But does that mean you must be as productive as the rest of them? No, you shouldn't have to. While we should use the time we have at hand valuably, experts recommend not stressing too hard in the effort to be productive during the COVID-19 quarantine. It's a difficult time for each and every one of us. Mental health isn't at its strongest with the worry of being separated from loved ones, anxiety at wondering if supplies will last and stress of facing the brand new situation.

Cynthia Pong, Founder of Embrace Change said, "There is a tendency in this country and in Western society and in capitalism to be self-critical as opposed to being self-compassionate." Even those who are usually motivators and go-getters may find it difficult to cope as pandemic emergencies such as this one can restrict creativity. So if you're drawing blanks on doing something useful, this is probably why.
Don't let social media give you a guilt complex about using your time the right way or wrong way. Instead of feeling that way, allow yourself to feel compassion. This is a life-changing situation that no one has ever gone through before and there isn't a rule book on what you should do. If productivity is running through you to learn an instrument or cook a meal, go right ahead. If it isn't, that's fine too.
