Of all things that are iconic (supermodels, designer footwear, artwork to name a few), neither you nor me would have imagined the sandwich was in that list. But it is. Far from being only miscellaneous fillings between two slices of bread, these 7 iconic sandwiches are famous across the world for their global appeal and delicious flavour.
1. The Philly Cheesesteak, USA
A sandwich that finds global appeal even today, the delicious philly cheesesteak is a meat eaters delight. It was invented in the 1930s by Pat Olivieri. He was grilling meat at his hotdog cart and a cab driver asked for a steak sandwich, which led to its creation. A philly cheesesteak is made of rib eye and melted cheese between buns topped with fried onions, mushrooms or peppers.
2. Doner Kebab, Turkey/Germany
Although the doner kebab is known for its Turkish origins, it was made in Berlin by Turkish immigrant Kadir Nurman. To match the fast-paced life in the city, he made the flat bread sandwich with vegetables, spit roasted meat and sauce to carry while eating.
3. Vada Pav, India
The street food favourite is now a sandwich that is known across the world. Its origins are traced to Ashok Vaidya who made the batter fried potato in bread with garlic chutney on top and started a food revolution with his vegetarian sandwich that is still a Mumbai staple.
4. Gatsby, South Africa
No, don't mistake this for the film. In fact, this sandwich was named after it by Rashaad Pandy, who created it by pulling together ingredients he had on hand to feed a group of hungry customers. The Gatsy consists of lettuce, sausage, fries and sauce and can be found in many other places today.
5. Croque Madame, France
This right here is a breakfast sandwich like no other. Its origins can be traced to a Parisian café in 1910. The decadent sandwich is made of ham and cheese between bread with a fried egg on top. It also has a healthier counterpart, the Croque Monsieur which comes sans the egg.
6. Chip Butty, UK
This British favourite may seem simple and somewhat strange but is still delectable, especially for a midnight meal. It is made by layering bread slices with butter and packing them with thick chips in between. Additionally, brown sauce or ketchup can be added on top.
7. Banh Mi, Vietnam
Comments
While many wouldn't associate a sandwich with Vietnam, Banh Mi is a drool-worthy surprise. It is made from Vietnamese meats and vegetables in the filling - pork sausage, cucumber and daikon being a few. This is topped with French condiments like pate, jalapeno and mayonnaise, all in a baguette.
