A little over a year ago, Alia Bhatt was introduced as Gangubai Kathiawadi when the film's first look posters were revealed. Now we finally get a glimpse of how the Bollywood actress breathes life into the role with the teaser release of the Sanjay Leela Bhasali film. While Alia gave us a defiant, unblinking stare in the posters back in January 2020, the video snippet gives us a closer look of her role as the mafia queen. Based on the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by S. Hussain Zaidi, it takes us through the life and times of Gangubai Kathiawadi, a simple girl who rose to power and sculpted her own path.
While casting Alia Bhatt in the role has been debated, we're waiting to see how she tackles portraying such a powerful character. The teaser may have only been a minute and a half long but every moment she was on screen, her presence was riveting. Beauty, while not often acknowledged, has a supporting role to play in movie scripts and can accompany a character's look from zany and playful to dark and terrorizing. In Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia's beauty looks have portrayed strength, pride and power in every shot.
When she lifts her gold-rimmed dark glasses, we catch a glimpse of her large red bindi and radiant skin with her hair pulled back in a bun behind her dupatta.
In a shot that has come to be associated with the teaser, all focus is drawn to Gangubai's full brows and heavily kohl-drawn eyes. The rest of her face is traced with mauve lipstick and a touch of colour on her cheeks.
Gangubai's striking red bindi and intimidating dark eyes are a permanent makeup feature and in this picture, are accented with a long braided worn to the side and swung in the front.
One of the final shots in the teaser is possibly the most memorable ones with Gangubai's mehendi-patterned hands joined together. She glances up with her kajal-lined eyes and curls running through her tresses add depth to this look.
We can't wait to see what comes next from the film.
