On Beauty Standards, Katrina Kaif Said, "I Felt Judgement Like I Did Not Deserve To Be There If I Wasn't Looking Perfect"

Bollywood star Katrina Kaif and beauty brand founder Huda Kattan sat down to talk about makeup, its power as a tool to transform the way one looks, building a persona and how it is really okay to be yourself in a world based on appearance. Katrina Kaif shared a sneak-peak of the interaction on a collaborative post with Huda Kattan, Huda Beauty and Kay By Katrina. Beauty brand founders Katrina Kaif and Huda Kattan, who respectively created Kay By Katrina and Huda Beauty, chatted about their beauty babies and even did each other's makeup, with Huda trying her famous baking technique on Katrina. They sat on a couch and chatted, almost five years after they initially started discussing the prospect of meeting. Huda took Katrina's number from a group chat that had a bunch of beauty founders and texted her. Katrina loved her message and that's how things kicked off.

In the course of the interview, Huda asked Katrina, "As a Hindi actress at the peak of her career, why did you then decide to move into makeup, cause that's a big move and a scary move I'm sure?" Katrina reverted, "It is. Since a teenager, I've been obsessed and passionate about makeup. It almost became this form of self expression that I didn't have otherwise. I was a really shy teenager." Huda couldn't believe it and Katrina asserted, saying, "people don't believe it but I was so shy."

Katrina spoke about how makeup gave her self-expression, "Makeup somehow gave me this form of self expression which allowed me to create this glamorous persona." She threw light on her journey into the world of show biz, continuing, "Quickly, as a model sitting in the chair of some of the best makeup artists in the country and then even the world. I was always observing their techniques, asking them questions like, 'why are you smudging the liner?', 'why are you using the concealer here?', 'why are you using a lip liner?' I think very quickly, I learnt all these techniques and I realised, 'okay listen, I know my face really well, and I know what I want to look like and very quickly, I started doing most of my own makeup."

Katrina knew what she wanted from her product and that created a desire in her to fill the gap in the market of high performance celebrity makeup and products that deliver. She said, "As an actor and as a face leading beauty brands, I have loved that and have had so many incredible moments."

Katrina next spoke how she has felt pressured to match a certain standard of beauty, saying, "But there have been moments where I have felt an obligation to match up to a certain stereotype of beauty that in some days, moments, months or even years I didn't quite match up. I felt a certain sense of judgement like I did not deserve to be there if I wasn't looking perfect or looking my best. And that sense of judgement struck an emotional chord with me. That kind of hurt because you don't look your best a certain month or year also. And you think that means I don't deserve to be here? Is it just about the physicality?"

Katrina, who has been defined as the gold standard of beauty in Bollywood and even been dubbed as "Barbie", questions her self-image because of not looking her best sounds unbelievable. But it also helps us understand the pressure of living on the radar.

Katrina continued, "There is really no standard or stereotype of beauty and everyone is accepted, everyones is beautiful, everyone fits in. And that's where our tag line came from, 'its kay to be you' however you are." This was the emotional reason and motivation behind starting the brand Kay Beauty.

Katrina then moved the spotlight on Huda Kattan and spoke of how she has been a symbol of self-acceptance and the 'come as you are mantra'. She said, "I think you really are a huge role model to so many women all across the world. And I think everyone sees you as the OG kind of influencer or beauty blogger. I think you created that space and that's huge for you to have carved that path out." This throws light on how Huda Kattan's presence on the internet has been a source of self-acceptance and assurance, of being beautiful by billions of women globally. Now that is quite something to achieve as a beauty blogger, beauty brand founder and more.
