It seemed like conquering the fashion world wasn't enough for Manish Malhotra. The scores of successful runway shows, designing for Bollywood films and dressing up the who's who of the film industry were only the start. In December 2018, the celebrated Indian designer launched his own haute couture makeup line in association with MyGlamm. Now a growing trend amongst designers, they are steadily branching out into beauty and extending their brand names to products that find themselves on dressers across the world. Manish Malhotra spoke to Swirlster about his introduction to the beauty world, his 30th year in costume design, the launch of the 2020 celebration edit and what the year holds for the label.
This year marks Manish's 30th year of costume design in Bollywood films and he shows no signs of slowing down. "I was always interested in the eyeliner or lipcolour because to style somebody, you need the complete look. I was new when I worked in Gumrah which Sridevi acted in, and I asked how actresses have their hair long in Indian outfits but short in the next scene in Western outfits - there has to be consistency! We finalised on a blunt bob wig which we cut at a hairdresser. For me, it was important that a character had a particular hairstyle as well as makeup," says Manish, taking us back to his beginnings in Bollywood.
For him, creating a makeup line was a long time coming. Reveals Manish, "It took me many years to come up with a collection and in MyGlamm I found the right partner. They, like me, were hungry to make products that were good quality, at a good price and available to many people. I always believed that the perfect eyeliner or lip colour can make or break an outfit. When you need to go to a party from work, you change to a jacket or scarf. But it's that fine eyeliner that adds glamour or lovely lip colour that makes you look dressed up."

On speaking about the Manish Malhotra Haute Couture Makeup's 2nd collection, the 2020 Celebration Edit, the man of the moment says, "Manish Malhotra beauty doesn't have just one beautiful face to the brand, it's doesn't have an ambassador and that's because it's all about our product. Every single woman who wears our product is our ambassador. The 2020 Celebration Edit is an amalgamation of many women. Whether it's Tahira Kashyap, Mira Rajput, Ananya Birla or Anjali Lama, it's about what they do and who they are. I was keen on getting different women who stood for our product."
