If it's a conversation that you're avoiding because you're conscious about broaching the topic or apprehensive about how your partner will react to your needs and concerns, it's time to bite the bullet and talk about sex, baby. NDTV Swirlster spoke to Kanusha YK, psychotherapist and relationship expert, Allo Health for her expertise on the importance of sexual communication.

Why Communication About Sex Is Important
The presence of open, direct discussion in the bedroom is one of the foundations of a healthy sexual relationship between partners. As a couple, you must balance out each other's wants and needs, and the best way to do this is through effective communication. It can be challenging to discuss sex openly, especially with new partners but for a happy, fulfilling, and healthy sexual relationship, honest conversation is a pre-requisite. Other reasons for couples to seek sex therapy include shyness, anxiety, and shame, which prevent partners from discussing and openly addressing their sexual concerns with their partners. More common problems include erectile dysfunction, loss of sexual desire or differences in sexual preferences.
Awkwardness Is Okay
It may be challenging to speak about sex with partners, and it is normal to feel awkward. Sometimes just the prospect of having these conversations can lead to anxiety in both spouses. But for a strong relationship to last a lifetime, both partners must be willing to engage in challenging conversations and deal with the problems head-on. It's crucial to maintain your emotional integrity and avoid putting on a facade. One of the most important aspects of maintaining a good, sexually healthy relationship is to communicate and interact with your partner without passing any judgement on what they say.
Pick A Date
It's common for couples to hesitate to bring up sexual issues out of the blue, so it's important to schedule a conversation and create a welcoming environment before it's too late and it ends up snowballing into larger issues. Interactions will be more beneficial and fruitful if they are planned with a positive goal in mind. Just pause, breathe, and fix a time to talk to your partner to address any problem areas. Great conversations and healthy sexual relationships result from great conversations. Couples' needs and desires for closeness and connection are better met, resulting in an overall happier life, when they communicate openly and honestly about sex with their partners.
